Constanta’s museums, history and art just steps from Rezident Tomis Marina
A day in Constanta can begin at the harbour and continue through almost two millennia of history and art. Just a few minutes from Rezident Tomis Marina, the Roman Mosaic Edifice, the Ion Jalea Sculpture Museum and the Constanta Art Museum form a cultural route that you can explore on foot.
These three stops take visitors from ancient Tomis and its bustling port to 20th-century Romanian sculpture, then on to a collection tracing the development of Romanian art from Theodor Aman and Nicolae Grigorescu to the avant-garde and contemporary works.
The Roman Mosaic Edifice, discovered beneath the modern city
The first stop is near Ovidiu Square, approximately 550 metres from Rezident Tomis Marina. The Roman Mosaic Edifice was discovered by chance in 1959, during modernisation works on Constanta’s peninsula. An ancient wall uncovered beneath the foundations of an apartment building led to the discovery of one of the most important monuments of ancient Tomis.
Built around the turn of the 4th century, the edifice formed part of a major waterfront development and faced the ancient harbour. Its three levels descended towards the sea in terraces, with their substantial walls also helping to stabilise the slope.
The upper level contained a hall of approximately 2,000 square metres, covered with a polychrome mosaic. Almost 400 square metres survive today, featuring geometric and plant motifs. Among the leaves emerging from a stylised vase, visitors can spot a white dove, the only surviving animal representation in the composition.
The size of the hall and its white and coloured marble decoration suggest a space used for political, cultural and social gatherings, as well as the economic activities of an important port city. The lower levels contained vaulted storage rooms, where archaeologists discovered amphorae, anchors, ingots and other objects associated with trade in the port of Tomis.
Following extensive restoration, conservation and modernisation works between 2020 and 2025, the Roman Mosaic Edifice reopened to the public on 14 November 2025. Visitors can now explore an upgraded exhibition space that highlights both the mosaic and the monument’s connection to the ancient city.
The Ion Jalea Museum | sculpture in a house by the seafront
The route continues through the peninsula towards the Casino promenade. Approximately a 15-minute walk from Rezident Tomis Marina, the Ion Jalea Sculpture Museum is one of the few museums in Romania dedicated exclusively to sculpture.
The museum occupies Pariano House, an elegant building in the Neo-Romanian style, designed by architect Victor Stefanescu after the First World War. The house originally belonged to Constantin Pariano, a former prefect of Constanta, and was nationalised during the communist period.
In 1968, when Ion Jalea donated 108 of his works to the city, the collection found its home in this building. After the sculptor’s death, his family added to the donation, bringing the museum’s collection to 227 works.
Born in 1887 in Casimcea, Tulcea County, Ion Jalea maintained a strong connection to Dobrogea throughout his work. This is visible in the portraits and small-scale sculptures inspired by the features of local people and their traditional dress.
The works on display are made from plaster, bronze, stone and marble. The collection includes allegorical, religious and mythological figures, scenes of war and labour, nudes, portraits and monumental works. A visit traces the different stages of the artist’s career and offers a broad view of his development.
The proximity to the sea and the architecture of Pariano House complement the encounter with sculpture, making this museum one of the most enjoyable stops along Constanta’s seafront.
Constanta Art Museum, from Grigorescu to the avant-garde
The final stop on the route is on Tomis Boulevard, approximately 750 metres from Rezident Tomis Marina. The Constanta Art Museum displays its collection across three levels in two connected buildings.
The older building, constructed in 1895 in the Neoclassical style, originally housed Constanta’s oldest school. It is complemented by a modern building constructed between 1980 and 1982.
The museum grew around the painting and sculpture collections of the Constanta City Hall art gallery and the Balchik art gallery, which opened between 1935 and 1937. Its holdings later expanded through works transferred from the National Museum of Art in Bucharest, acquisitions and donations from artists such as Marius Bunescu, Ion Jalea and Boris Caragea.
The permanent collection is arranged chronologically, tracing the development of Romanian art. The tour begins with 19th-century paintings by Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu and Ioan Andreescu, alongside sculptures by Ioan Georgescu, Stefan Ionescu Valbudea, Frederic Storck and Dimitrie Paciurea.
The first half of the 20th century is represented by works from artists including Nicolae Tonitza, Stefan Dimitrescu, Theodor Pallady, Gheorghe Petrascu, Francisc Sirato, Iosif Iser, Camil Ressu, Oscar Han and Corneliu Medrea. The avant-garde is represented by works by Corneliu Mihailescu, M. H. Maxy and Milita Petrascu.

A cultural route starting from Rezident Tomis Marina
For guests at Rezident Tomis Marina, all three attractions are close enough to explore without a car:

- The Ion Jalea Sculpture Museum is approximately a 10-minute walk away.
The route can begin in Ovidiu Square, head down towards the Roman Mosaic Edifice and then continue to the Ion Jalea Museum through the old streets of the peninsula. From there, you can follow the seafront and walk through the city centre to the Art Museum.
Depending on how much time you spend in each museum, you can set aside a few hours or a full day, with stops in Ovidiu Square, Tomis Harbour or along the Casino promenade.
How far is the route from other Rezident locations?
The three museums are also easy to visit on a day trip from Rezident’s other seaside locations:
- From Rezident Eforie Nord, Constanta’s old town is approximately 15 kilometres away, with a journey time of around 25–30 minutes;
- From Villa Eforie 1 and Villa Eforie 2&3, the distance is approximately 18 kilometres, or around 30–35 minutes by car;
- From Rezident Corbu, the cultural route is approximately 30 kilometres away, with a journey time of around 40–45 minutes.

Three stops to include in a stay at Rezident

Cărturești Verona, a house filled with books
Cărturești Verona is located on Arthur Verona Street, in an old house whose rooms were gradually transformed into a bookshop. Opened in 2003, it has expanded over the years while preserving the feeling that you are stepping into a lived-in home rather than an ordinary commercial space.
The shelves continue from one room to the next, and every doorway seems to reveal a new part of the house. You may arrive looking for a particular book and leave much later, after exploring the literature, art, children’s books, music and design sections.
The tearoom and the garden behind the bookshop extend the experience beyond the shelves. When the weather allows, you can browse your newly chosen book beneath the trees or stay for a coffee, away from the pace of the boulevard just a few steps away.
Cărturești Verona is easy to reach from both Rezident locations. From Rezident Bălcescu, the route follows Magheru Boulevard and then continues along one of the streets leading towards Grădina Icoanei. From Rezident Eminescu, the bookshop can be included in a walk through the Piața Romană area.
Cărturești Carusel, light and architecture in the old town
On Lipscani Street, among the historic buildings and terraces of the old town, Cărturești Carusel comes into view all at once. Its façade preserves the elegance of the historic building, but it is the spacious, bright white interior that turns a visit into an experience in itself.
Restored and reopened as a bookshop in 2015, the building extends across several levels connected by staircases, galleries and curved balconies. Natural light filters through the glass roof down to the ground floor, while the bookshelves follow the architecture of the space without concealing it.
Books, albums, games, music and design objects are spread across the different floors, allowing you to explore the bookshop at your own pace. It is worth climbing to the top level to take in the entire interior from above, with its succession of white columns and balustrades.
From Rezident Bălcescu, the route to Cărturești Carusel passes through the University area and continues towards the Old Town. The visit can be combined with a walk through University Square, Lipscani Street and the surrounding streets, following a route through old Bucharest.
Humanitas Cișmigiu, a peaceful stop near the park
Humanitas Cișmigiu is located on Regina Elisabeta Boulevard, close to the entrance to Cișmigiu Gardens. It has the quieter atmosphere of a traditional bookshop—a place where you can look for a particular author, ask for a recommendation or spend some time browsing the latest releases.
Its selection of books is complemented by launches, meetings and cultural conversations. The bookshop is therefore not simply a place to buy a book, but also one where you can meet writers, translators and readers brought together by the same story.
Its location near Cișmigiu makes it easy to include in a day spent exploring central Bucharest. After your visit, you can cross the boulevard for a walk through the park or continue towards Calea Victoriei and the streets surrounding Sala Palatului.

Sera Eden is located at 37 C.A. Rosetti Street, in the historic garden of Casa Brătienilor. The restaurant was created around the property’s former greenhouse, preserving the connection between the architecture of the old house and the surrounding greenery.
The garden does not reveal itself immediately from the street. Beyond the entrance, tables appear among trees and plants, arranged around the transparent structure of the greenhouse. The centre of Bucharest remains close, but the noise of its busy boulevards feels much farther away.
The internationally inspired menu is suitable for both lunch and dinner, complemented by cocktails and seasonal drinks. Sera Eden is a lovely choice for a meal for two, a gathering with friends or dinner at the end of a day spent exploring the city.

Grădina Povernei, a hidden courtyard in central Bucharest
Grădina Povernei is located at 22 Povernei Street, between Piața Romană and Piața Victoriei. The restaurant occupies an old house, with indoor rooms inspired by the four seasons and a leafy garden tucked away from the street.
While Sera Eden stands out through the architecture of its former greenhouse and its spectacular setting, Grădina Povernei has the more intimate atmosphere of an old Bucharest home. The courtyard is equally suited to a quiet lunch or a dinner that continues late into the evening.

Approximately 40 minutes from Rezident Corbu, Histria Fortress preserves the remains of the first recorded city on the territory of present-day Romania. Located near Lake Sinoe, the archaeological site can be explored on a half-day trip, whether you are staying in Corbu, Constanța or Eforie.
14 Centuries of History on the shores of the Black Sea
Histria was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletus and remained inhabited for approximately 14 centuries. The city passed through Greek, Roman and Roman-Byzantine periods, traces of which can still be seen today.
In Antiquity, Histria stood on the shore of the Black Sea, beside a gulf that gradually became present-day Lake Sinoe as the geography of the area changed. Its location turned the city into an important trading centre, with a harbour, temples, public spaces, homes and workshops.
The site was identified in 1868 by French archaeologist Ernest Desjardins, while systematic archaeological research began in 1914 under the direction of Vasile Pârvan. Excavations continue to this day, and some of the artefacts discovered here are displayed in the site’s museum.
What to see at Histria Fortress
Your visit can begin at the museum, where you will find amphorae, pottery, inscriptions, glass objects, jewellery and bas-reliefs uncovered during archaeological excavations.
The route then continues outdoors, through the remains of the ancient city. You can see its fortifications and gates, the temples of the sacred area, the Roman baths, basilicas and traces of former homes. The landscape adds another dimension to the experience, with the ruins overlooking Lake Sinoe, where the ancient gulf once stood.
Allow approximately two hours to visit the museum and explore the outdoor site. During summer, it is best to arrive in the morning or towards the end of the afternoon, as there is little shade along the route. Water, sun protection and comfortable footwear are recommended.
Opening hours
Histria Fortress can be visited throughout the year. During the summer season, from 1 May to 30 September, the Histria Museum Complex is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00. During the off-season, it is open from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30.

Getting there from Rezident locations
The drive from Rezident Corbu to Histria Fortress takes approximately 40 minutes. You can plan your visit for the first part of the day, then return to Corbu for the rest of the afternoon.
From Rezident Tomis Marina, the journey takes approximately one hour. From the Rezident locations in Eforie, allow around one hour and 20–30 minutes. Travel times may vary depending on traffic, particularly during summer weekends.

A few minutes from Ovidiu Square, at 8C Remus Opreanu Street, Bric-a-Brac brings together objects for the home selected for their usefulness, materials and the way they age over time. The shop’s concept centres on well-made everyday objects sourced from Romania and other European countries.
On its shelves, you will find Romanian ceramics, enamelware, recycled-glass objects, wooden brushes and utensils, baskets, textiles, candles and other pieces for the kitchen and home. They are simple objects, often difficult to find in conventional shops, chosen to be used for many years.
Bric-a-Brac also offers a different perspective on the idea of a souvenir. Instead of a purely decorative object, you might return home with an enamel mug, a woven basket, a ceramic piece or something you will use every day. It will remind you of Constanța precisely because it will become a natural part of your home.

A Walk from Rezident Tomis Marina

Travel times from Rezident’s Eforie and Corbu locations

From Rezident Eforie Nord and Rezident Villa Eforie 1, 2&3, the drive to Constanța’s historic peninsula takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
From Rezident Corbu, allow approximately 35–40 minutes by car to reach Constanța’s Old Town, depending on the route and traffic conditions.

At the beginning of the summer season, Eforie starts to change. More people arrive, terraces reopen, and the resort slowly regains the energy it is known for.
And yet, some things do not change with the season.
At Capul Turcului, in Eforie Sud, the swans return every year from September until May.
